The kidney is one of the body’s important organs. It functions to remove waste, regulate the balance of water and minerals, and produce and regulate the action of important hormones such as erythropoietin, renin, and vitamin D, etc. Normally, there are two kidneys, which can compensate for each other. When kidney function is lost to the end stage, various changes occur, such as accumulation of waste products, loss of appetite, nausea and vomiting, dizziness, itching, paleness, shortness of breath, swelling, seizures, abnormal heart rhythm, or loss of consciousness. Causes that can lead to kidney failure include:

• Chronic diseases, especially diabetes, high blood pressure, gout, etc.
• Chronic pyelonephritis
• Stenosis or occlusion of the blood vessels supplying the kidneys
• Urinary tract obstruction, such as stones or various masses
• Immune system diseases, such as SLE
