Endoscopic spine surgery

It is a surgery that involves less dissection or cutting of surrounding tissues compared to traditional surgery. In the past, spinal surgery required a large incision, muscle dissection, destruction of unnecessary muscles, and removal of significant tissue.

However, minimally invasive surgery targets the lesion area of the patient directly. Therefore, muscle damage in the surrounding area is less, blood loss is reduced, postoperative injuries are minimized, and the hospital stay is shorter. Patients can return to their normal lives more quickly.

Can be divided into 2 groups

1. Non-fusion surgeryNon-fusion surgery used in cases of patients with narrow foraminal stenosis or herniated disc compressing the nerve

2.Fusion surgeryFusion surgery is used in cases where the bones are unstable. We need to perform fusion surgery to make the bones adhere together. This is applicable in conditions such as spinal instability or scoliosis. This approach allows for minimally invasive surgery. There are several methods, which may involve surgery from the front, side, or back.

Surgical Procedure

For the surgical procedure, such as endoscopic surgery, the patient is positioned lying face down. A small incision of about 1 cm is made, and a tube with a high-magnification camera at the tip is inserted to observe the internal lesion. This helps clearly visualize the nerves and intervertebral discs.

Then, another instrument is inserted through the camera to work inside. The procedure typically takes no more than 1 hour for endoscopic surgery. If it is a minimally invasive joint fusion, the approach depends on the side of access. From the back, the process begins with inserting four steel screws to stabilize the spine, then widening the spinal canal, removing degenerated intervertebral discs, and replacing them with artificial discs made of plastic or using the patient's own bone to replace the affected vertebrae, followed by suturing the incision.

Preoperative Preparation

1. Quit smoking approximately 2 weeks to 1 month before surgery to help improve surgical outcomes.

2. If you have underlying conditions such as hypertension or diabetes, you must undergo proper preparation to ensure safety during anesthesia and the surgical outcome.

Postoperative Self-Care

It will be similar to general surgery, but with smaller incisions, patients will experience less pain and recover faster.
